ANTON VLADZYMYRSKYY

A SHORT HISTORY OF THE KNIVES OF UKRAINE

Part 2 : THE BRONZE AGE

The discovery of metals resulted in a revolution in the manufacture of knives. Blades are wide, leaf-form, double-edged, with well made, high rockwell edges. There are three types of tang. One has a rhombus shaped widening in the center, another has a short quillon at the ricasso while the third widens progressively toward the pommel. Thus begins the development of a new kind of weapon - the dagger.

Katakombnaya culture. People of this culture used:

Double-edged knives with leaf-form blades.

Bronze daggers with straight wide triangular double-edged blades without crossguards. The tang had an insignificant rectangular thickening near the pommel;

Bronze knife with a wide short leaf-form blade, it's length practically equal to it's width, this weapon has well made hard edges. The handle's tang features a small thickening near the end.

Yamnaya culture.
In this period are found bronze double-edged spear-form knives and bronze knives with triangular blades. Ancient silicon knives are still used.

Bondarkhinskaya culture.
The workmen of this culture produced bronze knives with straight double-edged blades and iron knives in arrowhead-form."

Sabatynovskaya and Belozerskaya cultures.
"short swords, daggers and knives (wide, leaf-form, double edged blades with ribs and small crossguard)."

Gaalshtat. culture
Knives of two kinds are known:

silicon sickle-form;

bronze, straight, single edge blades with curved back.
