Knife nomenclature varies a little depending on the knife. Some knifemakers also use different terms for the same thing which complicates things a little further.

A hidden tang blade will generally be identified as having the following parts.

NOTES

  1. The "guard" in the above example is known as a "half guard" or "single guard".
  2. The "spine" of the blade can also be called the "back".
  3. The "blade" including the tang is sometimes referred as the "shank".
  4. The "grip" in the above example is described as "cord wrapped".

NOTES
  1. In some knives, a slab called a bolster is used, instead of a guard.
  2. Bolsters can also be attached to the end of the handle in place of a pommel.
  3. The handle slabs or "scales" are usually attached with pins or rivets.

NOTES
  1. In some knives, sheet material is used, in place of the guard or bolsters.
  2. Sheet material can also be used on the end of the grip in place of a pommel.
  3. This can help improve the balance of a knife and reduces the weight.
  4. When sheet material is used the respective parts are referred to as "endcap" and "ferrule".
