Kingdom of Fear
After reading the article in the German Sueddeutsche Zeitung it seems that the Brits are indeed experiencing a dramatic increase of youthful violence with youths feeling 'the adults have no interest in protecting them' and that they must defend themselves against violence.
The Centre for Crime and Justice (King’s College in London) state that all actions taken to reduce juvenile criminality have had no measurable effect. Now the government is talking ' 0 tolerance' .
Gangs rule the streets with gang warfare common apparently. Criminologist David Wilson of Birmingham City University says: 'they are reacting to a world in which the older generation demonize youths as disturbers of the peace and where youths no longer trust the grownups to protect them. Drastic police action brings nothing...we need long range solutions.'
Youths interviewed talked about 'an evil world out there where terrible things happen' and that the reason most teenagers carry weapons is that they are scared.
Camilla Batmanghelidjh, a social worker, said that some children are so brutalized that they sleep with a knife under their pillow. They don't care if they live or die.
Shown is a picture of kids hands holding: a one hand opening knife, brass knuckles, a weighted stick, and a glass breaking hammer (probably stolen from a bus or train). Also mention of knives and sharpened screwdrivers used by a gang of 15 who invaded a pub and demolished it in Bromley, which left it 'looking like a slaughterhouse'.
What has gone wrong and is going wrong here ?
Another fine mess...this screwed up society has gotten us into.
Cheers
