Delta Force 1

Delta Force rapidly became the ultimate reality based computer combat simulation game when it was first released. While fantasy games like Quake are higher in the popularity ratings Delta Force retains a loyal following especially with weekend warriors. And even among some military personel it enjoys a grudging respect for being as real as a computer game gets. Only the US military combat simulators as used by the army are any better.

Played by thousands on a daily basis as a single player game and by hundreds daily in multiplayer matches online.

The Kabar

Some players, not content with playing the game with the full arsenal of weapons supplied, find that they require more of a challenge. These folk have actually played through entire levels with only a trusty knife. The standard issue combat knife that comes with the game is the venerable Kabar pattern with a 6 inch clip point blade and stacked leather or wooden grip. These knives saw action in most of the conflicts of the 20th century so it is fitting that this is the standard issue for the game also. The kabar still enjoys a healthy respect among the faithfull.

Tactics.

Key elements to success are.
  1. Seeing without being seen
  2. Knowing where the enemy is at all times
  3. Extrapolating enemy movement in order to be able to interdict at the right time and place.
  4. Being able to move silently and fast
  5. Exploiting the landscape and conditions.
  6. Ambush
Crouch or go prone when not mobile. When all else fails and panic sets in, run like hell for the nearest cover and go flat on your belly. Keep crawling until you are out of range or the enemy no longer knows your location. Use ambush but avoid laying in wait for long periods. Try to arrive at your ambush point just before the enemy. Approach from behind and get in close. Enemy patrol members tend to cover each other so go for the one in the rear first. Try to keep the ground behind you clear so no one can sneak up on you. If the enemy is not in single file pick off the guys who are on the periphery of the group first. Two kills are not twice as difficult as one and are quite achievable. You can draw the enemy into situations where you have the advantage by getting them to run after you. Water is your friend. Enemy bullets loose their effectivness under water. Underwater ambushes are particularly effective as the enemy will come to the waters edge trying to kill you while you lie safely in deep water. Then once they loose interest and turn to look in another direction you can swim up behind them and take them by surprise.
You spend a lot of time crawling around on your belly. As a result you are less easy to see and you present a smaller target to enemy snipers. Its easier to sneak up on the enemy when their attention is drawn elsewhere. Sometimes surprisingly so.
Delta force is brought to you by Novalogic and is currently on its third release. A nice touch : the Delta Force logo features a knife.

Endgame

Of course the ultimate thrill is to get to the other end of the level in one piece having achieved your mission objectives. Living to fight another day is part of what makes life sweet but remember there is an old saying about, "taking a knife to a gunfight".
